Our delight in being autonomous and living an independent life goes deep into our hearts. We are taught to make our own choices, choose our own course, and pursue whatever we think is best. As long as we embrace this self-focused freedom we will never become mature disciples of Jesus Christ. The one who gave up the glory of heaven calls us to follow after him without compromise. It’s an intimidating challenge, especially for Americans who are used to making their own choices. But without this commitment we will become stagnant and stuck in life. We will never know the dramatic transformation that can be ours in Christ. We may be busy churchgoers, but we will not authentically reflect his character and his priorities. If we want our lives to reflect Christ and his plans for us, yielding ourselves to him daily is not an option. It is essential.
